Objectives of the problem
The objective of this project is to create a Car Share System for use by employees at Gatwick Airport. In order to do this, careful analysis of the existing process must be carried out.
The Car Share Scheme is a relatively new initiative only recently introduced to Gatwick Airport as part of the strategy for the Transport Team within the Planning and Environment Department.
The Car Share Scheme, in its current state, is in its very early stages and few employees participate in the Car Share Scheme due to very limited staff awareness of its existence.
The management of the Scheme is currently performed manually by a member of the Transport Team. The objective of the Scheme is to encourage more car driving employees to car share on a regular basis. However, the current process is effective for a small number of employees, but as staff awareness and participation grows, a manual process will not be sufficient.
This project is intended to provide a solution that effectively manages the Car Share Scheme and overcomes the problems with the current manual procedure. What the project achieved
The project produced a prototype system developed in Microsoft Access and Visual Basic for demonstration to the user as a proposed solution for managing the Car Share System. The prototype consists of a relational database for storing details of car sharers with an interface developed in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), which allows the user to perform various administrative functions with the data in the database, such as updates and deletions. The system automates the process of matching compatible car drivers according to various criteria, which was previously done manually. The prototype system provides a solution to problems
experienced with the current manual system, therefore, if developed into a fully functioning system and installed in the future, the system would enable the administrator of the Car Share Scheme to carry out management of the Scheme more effectively and efficiently. All minimum requirements of the project were fulfilled and surpassed.
